This Is All Kinds Of Wrong of the Day: Kyle Willis, a 24-year-old unemployed father of one from Cincinnati, passed away last week from an easily treatable tooth infection because he didn’t have health insurance and couldn’t afford a simple tooth extraction.

Willis began experiencing a wisdom tooth ache two weeks ago, and was told by dentists he would need to have it pulled. He didn’t have insurance to cover the procedure and couldn’t pay for it out of pocket, so he decided to skip treatment altogether.

After his face began to swell, Willis went to the emergency room, where he was prescribed antibiotics, which, again, he couldn’t afford. He decided to stick with pain medicine. The infection eventually spread to his brain causing it to swell.

He died last Tuesday.

American Academy of Family Physicians president-elect Dr. Glenn Stream says that, even if Willis had access to a free dental clinic, “the wait is often months…and this young man died within two weeks of his problem.”

“[Willis] might as well have been living in 1927,” Dr. Jim Jirjis, director of general internal medicine at Vanderbilt University, told ABC News. “All of the advances we’ve made in medicine today and are proud of, for people who don’t have coverage, you might as well never have developed those.”

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. If you don’t believe that health care is a right then you believe that poor people, like this young man, deserve to die.

As much as I feel bad for this man, I can’t just say, “Health Care should be free.” There are too many factors that would affect it.

Anyways, I don’t believe Health Care should be free rather the government should find a way to make it more available to everyone by, like, lowering the costs based on a person’s income and other things.

As much of a necessity Health Care is, you can’t just make it free.

It’s like saying, “People need food and water to survive. Let’s make it free.”

There are free clinics, and yes, sadly they do have long waits, but there’s not much else the government can do about it, at least in my opinion.

I’d say more, but it’d just inspire hate mail. No quiero.

You’re right it is like saying that, because I believe that no one should have to die for lack of money. Do I believe we need to make all food or water free? no, of course not. However, I do believe that there should be reasonable options for people who are unable to afford them.

So you keep talking about the hate mail you’re going to receive (it’s even in your tags), did you stop to think about why? Why would your opinion generate hate mail? Could it be because your opinion is drenched in privilege and ignorance?

You just basically defended me, yourself. You said, you wouldn’t make all food and water free. Exactly, there are soup kitchens, etc. Likewise, like previously stated, there are free clinics. However, like soup kitchens, space and food (time) is limited.

I’m speaking non-aggressively, so if you aim to bash me, your point becomes invalid. Please understand that.

Let me tell you, right now. I am the son of a Single mother who works as a secretary with a pay of under… $25k a year. My “father” has another family, and hasn’t paid child support for years. I don’t believe I am privileged. We get by. Sometimes, we don’t get by as well off as other months.

Again, I’m not speaking aggressively or attacking your character. I’m simply stating my views against yours.

They shouldn’t be limited, that’s my point. If you can’t afford health care, food, or water you don’t deserve to die. Not from lack of availability and certainly not from lack of money.

You are privileged, “there are soup kitchens and free clinics” is a privileged statement. Your story of how rough you actually have it doesn’t change that.
